Latest CAA Publication June 2020

Dear PANDAS Member,

This is the latest publication (document link below) from the CAA regarding the new legislation that was due to come into force in 2019 & 2020.

The new legislation has not changed much since it was originally proposed. The last published date for it to be implemented was November 2020. This has now been extended until 31st December 2020. I suspect, as we get nearer that date, if past form is anything is to go by, the implementation date will be extended again.

The first few pages of the document are the ones that could affect us as model aircraft flyers and are worth reading through.

The references to the categories (Open, Specific & Certified) and flying near to uninvolved people, as defined below are ones, that would be most relevant to club flyers:

A1 (fly ‘over’ people)

A2 (Fly ‘close to’ people)

A3 (Fly ‘far from’ people)

The BMFA are still in negotiation with the CAA and are hoping that in the main, members of recognised bodies such as the BMFA, will be exempt from most of this new legislation.

I still think we could continue as normal at PANDAS, with aircraft up to 25 kilogrammes when this new legislation comes in to force.

The legislation is mainly aimed at the commercial operation of drones / aircraft and hopefully we will be exempted from most of it.

If anyone has any questions or needs to clarify anything, please feel free to call or email me.

PANDAS Chairman.
